Latin on Lost (episode 5.03, Jughead)!!! When a young Charles Widmore said, "Tace!" I silently shouted "euge!" And for us Latinists things only got better as Juliet said, "Duce nos ad vestra castra. Si placet." Now everyone is wondering if Latin is a convenient 'secret language' for private communication in front of enemies. Or have 'The Others' been on the island since Roman times. That might explain the huge foot from some long lost 4-toed Colossus. Here's my question - how did such a huge marble statue find itself on an island where marble is not found? Who knows, maybe the secret to what has been going on on the island lies in Lingua Latina. LATIN BIT OF THE WEEK Take a close look at the milestone pictured below. It tells us how far various cities are from the stone's place on the Via Appia. In line 3, Capua is 82 miles away and the 80 is written XXC! But a bit further on in line 6, Valencia is 181 miles away and 80 is now written LXXX! So the Romans not only wrote 90 as XC, but also 80 as XXC. On the other hand, the same person might well use both versions.
